As an adjunct to mammography:
When confronted with a difficult to interpret mammogram, scintigraphy images help answer diagnostic questions. The imaging agent is taken up by functional tumour tissue at a much higher rate than in normal tissue. The images are independent of breast density and other conditions such as scarring or implants that make a mammogram difficult to interpret.
Breast scintigraphic imaging is simple to perform and is well tolerated by patients with no painful breast compression.
